LETTER: While Trump’s win is disappointing, ‘let’s move forward with a renewed purpose’

In a letter to the editor, Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman, a candidate for mayor, explains that while President-elect Donald Trump’s (R) win is disappointing, there were some positive outcomes closer to home.

Dear Editor,

These last few days have been incredibly difficult for so many. I’ve felt it too. The results of the presidential election weren’t what we hoped for, and it’s natural to feel disappointed.

However, amidst the challenges, there are significant reasons to feel inspired and proud of our collective efforts, particularly in New Jersey.

Andy Kim’s victory in the U.S. Senate race signifies a seismic shift in New Jersey politics. As the first Jersey City elected official to endorse Kim, I’m particularly proud of his achievement.

He has been at the forefront of reforming our state’s political landscape, challenging long-standing practices that have favored party insiders.

Kim’s campaign successfully dismantled the notorious “county line” ballot system, leveling the playing field and paving the way for more democratic elections.

Locally, Matt Schneider and Tia Rezabala will be joining the Jersey City Board of Education, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our educational system. Their election demonstrates that grassroots efforts can lead to meaningful change.

It’s important to acknowledge that some of my male counterparts who backed other candidates may now attempt to walk away from their earlier choices, hoping we won’t remember they were on the wrong side of this fight.

Additionally, there are those who joined our cause later and may try to take credit as if they were there from the beginning. This behavior is something women in leadership often have to navigate.

Despite these challenges, let’s focus on the positive changes we’ve achieved. The successes of Kim, Schneider, and Rezabala remind us that change is possible at every level of government.

Their achievements should motivate us all to remain engaged in our democratic process, fostering a culture that values integrity and community service.

So let’s move forward with renewed purpose. Our dreams for a better future are still within reach if we work together. Remember, every setback is an opportunity to rise stronger.

Together, we’ll keep fighting for progress and building a brighter future for all Jersey City residents.

Joyce Watterman
Jersey City Council president

  1. Wild take to be taking credit for candidates explicitly anti NJEA as an anti trump win. Is there anyone more Dem establishment than the NJEA? Humorously the only NJEA candidate to actually survive is a Republican
