LETTER: In light of Katie Brennan case, time to ‘dismantle the patriarchal status quo’

1

In a letter to the editor, various community leaders in from Jersey City, as well as Bayonne Assemblyman Nick Chiaravalloti (D-31), are coming together in saying it’s time to “dismantle the patriarchal status quo” in light of Katie Brennan’s rape allegations.

Dear Editor,

To Katie Brennan and to all survivors of sexual assault:

We’re ready to listen to your stories, and acknowledge the pain that is often ignored or
minimized.

We’re ready to call out sexism wherever we see it, to struggle against patterns of behavior that demonstrate that women are not treated as equal to men.

We’re ready to support more women in public office, so that policies and laws are not just
written about women but by women.

And we’re ready to dismantle the patriarchal status quo, because a system that places political patronage above justice for women hurts all of us.
