In a letter to the editor, Assemblyman Will Sampson (D-31) explains how he’s approaching the invitation from Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democratic candidate for governor, to run on his ticket during next year’s Democratic primary.
As the Assemblyman for New Jersey’s 31st District, I have always been committed to serving the best interests of my constituents with integrity, dedication, and loyalty.
Recently, I was asked by Mayor Steven Fulop’s invitation that he would love for me to join him on his primary ticket for Governor. This is a significant opportunity, and I am very appreciative of Mayor Fulop’s confidence in my abilities and leadership.
However, I believe in the importance of loyalty and respect in politics, especially towards those who have supported and trusted me throughout my career.
Mayor Jimmy Davis has been a crucial mentor and supporter, and it was only right to discuss such a major decision with him.
My commitment to my constituents, my colleagues, and my principles has always guided my actions. I make my decisions based on careful consideration and what I believe is best for our community.
The recent headlines suggesting that I “do whatever Jimmy Davis tells me to do” are a mischaracterization of my intentions and values. Seeking counsel from trusted advisors is a hallmark of responsible leadership, not a sign of weakness.
I stand by my record of independent thinking and decision-making. While I appreciate Mayor Fulop’s offer, I will always ensure that any decision I make is in the best interest of the people I serve.
I will continue to be a dedicated and principled representative for the 31st District, working tirelessly for the betterment of our community.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support.
In solidarity,
Assemblyman Sampson
