Dear Editor,

In the crucial election for Jersey City School Board, the choice is clear. We need the Education Matters Team to continue the fight for funding for our schools, facilities improvements and putting children FIRST.

This team will fight for the funding so that Jersey City schools, no longer under state control, can provide quality education in upgraded facilities. This team will be the bridge to efficiency and accountability to the taxpayers.

Noemi Velazquez, a long-time community activist and dedicated board member, is an advocate for children and their very specific needs in Jersey City.

She supports Superintendent Norma Fernandez in the goal of first-class education for all of the students. Her expertise and knowledge is an asset to the district and she most definitely deserves re-election.

Christopher Tisdale is an excellent role model and teacher, His knowledge, as a graduate of the Jersey City Public Schools, in areas of teaching pedagogy and classroom management and techniques puts him on the cutting edge of instruction.

Christopher will bring this ability to the Board of Education. I believe his judgement and character will be most welcomed.

Afaf Muhammad brings to the Board, especially after Covid and learning loss, her abilities as a mental health counselor.

With the initiatives being created with the Jersey City Medical Center and state of the art mental health facilities within the schools, the time for innovation is NOW, It’s a most important time for professional assistance to address the students in a holistic way within the district.

As a union member for over 45 years, I support the Jersey City Education Association in their endorsement of the Education Matters ticket.

The teacher’s union role in the school system is one of quality education, parent and community engagement, and realizing the goal that every city student can achieve to their highest potential and be successful in life.

In closing, let’s not move backward but forward in this election. Please vote on November 8 for Noemi Velazquez 1I, Afaf Muhammed 2I and Christopher Tisdale 3I.
