Kearny man, 18, charged with attempted murder for Hoboken shots fired incident

An 18-year-old Kearny man has been charged with criminal attempted murder for a Hoboken shots fired incident that occurred yesterday afternoon that did not result in any injuries, authorities said.

Elias Mercado, 18, of Kearny, is charged with criminal attempted murder, burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of public housing, possession with intent to distribute, and possession with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school, the Hoboken PD announced.

Yesterday at approximately 1 p.m., Police Officers Bianca Arroyo and Jennifer Lee responded to the area of Fourth and Jackson Streets on reports of shots fired. Additional units also responded.

An on-scene investigation revealed that a dispute between two groups, known to each other, resulted in shots fired near the intersection of Fourth and Jackson Streets. All involved parties dispersed the area immediately following the gunfire, some in vehicles.

Officers quickly located Mercado in a nearby building and he was arrested for criminal attempted murder.

A search incident to arrest of Mercado located a bullet casing, 14 wax folds containing a white powdery substance suspected to be heroin, 17 vials containing small white rocks, suspected to be crack cocaine, and cash totaling $126.

The investigation by Hoboken Police Department’s Detective Bureau, led by Det. Sgt. William Collins, continues.

The Hoboken PD quickly publicized that an arrest was made yesterday afternoon, as well as that more police officers would be stationed at schools as a precaution.
