UPDATED: Jersey City woman, 21, arrested for fatal shooting of 23-year-old man, authorities say


A 21-year-old Jersey City woman has been arrested for the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office wrote on social media this evening.

“A 21-year-old Jersey City woman has been arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of Emmanuel Garcia, who was killed on May 3, 2021 on Princeton Avenue and Brown Place. More info to follow,” the law enforcement agency tweeted.

At 10:47 a.m. Saturday morning, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released new information.

Shianne Payne-Nanton, 21, of Jersey City, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a weapon (firearm) for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Payne-Nanton was apprehended and arrested by HCPO Homicide Unit detectives following a
motor vehicle stop at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

On Monday, May 3rd, just before 11:00 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Princeton Avenue and Brown Place in Jersey.

Responding officers found a 23-year-old male victim – later identified as Emmanuel Garcia
– who had sustained gunshot wound(s) to his body and was transported to the Jersey City
Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:24 p.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be gunshot wounds of the torso and left upper extremity and the manner of death to be homicide.

Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey
City Police Department for the investigation and arrest.

Furthermore, the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests may follow.
