The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program provides funding directly to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies for the hiring and rehiring of entry-level career law enforcement officers in an effort to create and preserve jobs, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman announced yesterday.

The program awarded the Jersey City Police Department $1,875,000, which will be used to hire or rehire 15 officers, the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Additionally, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office received a $1,500,000 grant to hire or rehire 12 officers. The two Hudson County departments were two of just 10 in New Jersey to receive federal monies.

The COPS Office is a federal agency responsible for advancing community policing nationwide.

Since 1995, COPS has invested over $14 billion to advance community policing, including grants awarded to more than 13,000 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to fund the hiring and redeployment of approximately 129,000 officers.
