The incident occurred just before midnight at the BP gas station located at the intersection of Communipaw and West Side Avenues as officers responded to a shots fired call.

According to ABC, two police officers were treated at the Jersey City Medical Center for minor injuries.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office deferred comment to the Attorney General’s Office, who issued a statement at 2:07 p.m. this afternoon.

According to the preliminary investigation, uniformed officers of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the intersection of Communipaw and West Side Avenues, at approximately 11:56 p.m. last night in response to a 911 call of a domestic dispute involving a man with a gun, the AG’s Office said.

During the encounter, one Jersey City police officer fired his service weapon, fatally wounding the man and the gun was recovered near the decedent. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene at about 12:19 a.m.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to Attorney General Directive 2019-4, which implements the statutory requirement that the AG’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody, and which establishes clear standards and procedures for conducting such investigations.

No further information, including the names of the police officer and the decedent, are being released at this time since the investigation is ongoing.

NBC reported that the gunman shot the woman prior to his encounter with police and she is in critical condition as a result.
