“We have the best police department in the state, bar none, and that starts from the top down,” Mayor Steven Fulop began in a statement.

“Effective leadership is key, especially when it comes to law enforcement, and I have no doubt this diverse group of newly promoted deputy chiefs and sergeants will continue the progress we’ve seen in recent years to enhance public safety, community relations, and quality of life overall.”

The mayor’s office also touted the diversity of the promotions, noting that around three-quarters of the officers hired since 2013 (when Fulop was first elected) represent minority populations.

“As police director, I’m working to enhance operations to allow for a more effective and more efficient police department, and these new sergeants and deputy chiefs are a major piece to that puzzle of ensuring our police department meets and exceeds the community’s expectations,” added Police Director Tawana Moody.

Out of the 39 new sergeants promoted at this morning’s ceremony at City Hall, over half are minorities and one-third are Hispanic.

“Police supervision is vital for the development of our police officers and to effectively facilitate the goals and mission of the JCPD. I commend Mayor Fulop, the city council, Public Safety Director James Shea, and Police Director Tawana Moody for investing in our police force and working with myself and the JCPSOA to identify the need for these promotions,” Jersey City Police Superior Officers Association President Sgt. Andrew LaBruno told HCV.

“I look forward to having our new Deputy Chiefs and Sergeants assume their new roles as they provide the very best public safety and community service for the residents of Jersey City.”
