The Hudson County Office of Consumer Protection is urging residents to report price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic by calling 201-795-6295 or logging onto hudsoncountynj.org.
“If you believe you’ve been a victim of price gouging during the current public health emergency, or have you witnessed what appears to be price gouging?,” HCCP Division Chief Steve Krywinski said in a public service announcement release on the county’s YouTube page.
“If so, we urge you to file a complaint with the Hudson County Officer of Consumer Protection,” added HCCP Assistant County Counsel Alberico DePierro.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Jersey City Police Department – in a joint effort with the municipal prosecutor’s office – have all been cracking down on price gouging recently.
County Sheriff Frank Schillari announced a “zero-tolerance policy” on price gouging earlier this week, indicating that violators could face fines up to $10,000.
Yesterday afternoon, Hudson County government announced 82 cases of coronavirus across their 12 municipalities and that a testing center will be coming to Secaucus early next week.
As of this morning, 89 cases have been announced publicly: 50 in Jersey City, 15 in Hoboken, two in West New York, four in Kearny, one in Secaucus, two in Weehawken, nine in North Bergen, and six in Bayonne.
