“I’m proud that my administration’s Open Space project recommendations were unanimously approved by the Board of County Commissioners. And I am also proud that my administration was able to increase funding for this year’s awards,” Hudson County Executive Craig Guy said in a statement.

“We are all dedicated to providing exceptional open spaces and parks in Hudson County, and the approval of the board signals the green light to move forward with making these plans reality for residents throughout the county. Improving the quality of life for all residents here in Hudson County is critically important to me so that all County residents are able to enjoy and access open spaces and parks that are adequately upgraded and repaired.”

This vote authorizes the expenditure of Open Space funds, and following this approval, the grantees may proceed with the acquisition, construction, or preservation project with two years to complete the project. Guy announced these recommendations in July.

“During [yesterday’s] commissioner meeting, I am proud to approve the county executive’s recommendations that will bring renewed and repaired Open Space parks to the residents and families of Hudson County,” added Hudson County Commissioners Chair Anthony Romano (D-5).

“Across Hudson County, these recommendations create incredible open space opportunities for all 12 municipalities, allowing our communities to enjoy safe recreation and socialization.”

In 2023, $4,952,211 was awarded to 16 Open Space projects, and a few projects from last year include the 11th Street Oval/Field of Dreams in Bayonne, the now completed Sinatra Park Multi-Purpose Athletic Field in Hoboken, and additional funding for Cape May Street Park in Harrison that is close to being complete.

This year’s increase is determined through a tax levy that is approved annually by the commissioners.

“As a member of the Open Space Advisory Board, I am proud to vote to approve the County Executive’s Open Space project recommendations, alongside the commissioner board, to improve open spaces throughout all 12 municipalities in Hudson County,”
noted Commissioner and Open Space Advisory Board member Fanny Cedeño (D-7).

“Upon completion, these projects will have a resounding positive impact within many communities throughout the county as playgrounds are improved, exercise equipment is replaced, and walkways are enhanced.”
