Hoboken High School’s debate team wins 10 awards at St. Peter’s United Nations debate

Hoboken High School’s debate team won 10 awards at the St. Peter’s University Model United Nations Debate Competition last week, including “Best Overall School Delegation.”

The competition differed from previous year’s since it was held over a two-day period remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to Best School Delegation, Hoboken High School students also earned the following awards:

• Juliet Hysen and Leah Haber won best delegate honorable mention in the Commission on the Status of Women regarding the Increase in Gender-Based Domestic Violence During the Covid-19 Pandemic and Intersection of Racism and Misogyny: Perceived Skin Tone and Women’s Rights.

• Feline Dirxx and Kia Hulstrom won best position paper in the Environmental Assembly for their analysis of the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Environmental Regulation and Enforcement and addressing Trans-border Environmental Stresses in the Indo-Pak Region.

• Sheila Lam won best delegate honorable mention while participating in the Food and Agriculture Organization committee regarding the Protection of Food Supply Chains During the Covid-19 Pandemic and Rising Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean.

• Frannie Michaels and Daniel Weintraub won best delegates for their work on addressing the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Human Rights in South Sudan and Systemic Racism and Police Brutality in the United States.

•Andrews Castlen and Asher Strell won best delegates in the United Nations Security Council regarding the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Active Regional Conflicts and the legality of Israel’s Annexation of Palestinian Land in the West Bank.
