Healy, Braker among hundreds who say goodbye to Charles T. Epps, Jr. in Jersey City

Former Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and President of the Jersey City chapter of the NAACP, William Braker, were among around 500 people gathered at St. Patrick’s Church in Jersey City to say their goodbyes to former Jersey City Superintendent of Schools, also an ex-assemblyman, Dr. Charles T. Epps, Jr. yesterday.

Epps passed away on March 17 at the age of 70, with his cause of death likely a heart attack.

After a four-mile funeral procession in the morning, several speakers addressed family and friends during the service, including Healy and Braker.

Healy told a light-hearted story about how Epps gave him a break from the local media before speaking about what a tremendous person he was.

Braker, who was brought to tears before the conclusion of his speech, kept a serious tone throughout when speaking about his “special friend.”
