UPDATED: HCPO investigating incident where Kearny police officer shot at moving vehicle


The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an incident where a Kearny police officer shot at a moving vehicle.

“The HCPO is investigating an Officer Involved Shooting in Kearny that occurred last night just after 8pm near the intersection of Bergen & Passaic Aves in which a vehicle was struck,” the HCPO tweeted this morning.

“There are no reports at this time of any injured individuals & the investigation is ongoing.”

At 3:47 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released further details.

Last night, shortly before 8 p.m., On Tuesday, September 29, 2020, shortly before 8:00 p.m., an officer with the Kearny Police Department observed a vehicle reported stolen – a White Hyundai Sante Fe with Florida plates – traveling south on Passaic Avenue.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, at which time the driver reversed and then drove toward the officer before fleeing the scene. One officer discharged his weapon during the incident.

The vehicle was recovered a short time after having crashed with a tractor trailer cab in Newark. The driver has not been located or come forward at this time.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

As is standard protocol, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has been notified and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is working in conjunction with the state attorney general.
