“Everything is gone….she literally left barefoot with a bathrobe. She has no family and the house where she rented a room was one of THREE that were then demolished by Jersey City,” the GoFundMe page, started by Marion Roger, description says.

“This photo is her the day after realizing everything she ever owned was lost…she had no renters insurance and was ‘allowed to live’ in the basement in exchange for babysitting the homeowners kids many years ago….and as they are older and the house has been destroyed she is homeless.”

The description continues that Vera Carvalho is Brazilian and speaks limited English, has no family here, and has lost everything.

“Hudson County and Jersey city will help with finding housing but we will need to buy hearing aids…a good bed….eyeglasses and all the basics for a new life,” the description also said.

As of Wednesday evening, the online effort has raised $2,629 from 31 donors towards a goal of $10,000.
