“Effective January 1, 2025, the K-9 Unit at the Hudson County Correctional Facility will be disbanded. This decision was part of comprehensive review of the facility’s operational practices to ensure that resources are utilized most effectively and efficiently,” Hudson County spokesman Mark Cygan said in an email following an inquiry from HCV.

“We are prioritizing the welfare of the K-9s and their handlers in this transition. The dogs will be rehomed in suitable environments through adoption programs or reassignment, ensuring they are well cared for. Additionally, handlers will not face salary reductions and will be reassigned to other critical roles within the facility.”

The K-9 unit at the county jail, located in Kearny, was formed after the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office added five new K-9 units in March 2018.

Cygan did not indicate what the jail would be doing to confiscate contraband going forward, but noted that other methods would be utilized in the future.

“This decision aligns with our commitment to maintaining a secure and safe environment while adapting to evolving operational needs. We remain dedicated to utilizing other strategies and technologies to effectively address contraband detection,” he added.

As of December 23rd, the average annual pay for a correctional officer in Hudson County, New Jersey is $56,371, or about $27.10 per hour, according to ZipRecruiter.
