Despite absence of Roque, West New York BOE race still features two clashing slates

Despite no signs of former West New York Mayor Felix Roque since the May 14th municipal elections, the local board of education race still features two clashing slates – as well as one independent candidate.

Board President Adam Parkinson is seeking re-election alongside Board Vice President David Morel, as well as first time candidate Marielka Diaz – who all backed Mayor Gabriel Rodriguez’s slate – under the “Your Children’s Future” banner.

They will take on the latest incarnation of the “Save Our Schools” ticket which features Trustee Ron Scheurle, Alex Navas, and another newcomer in Carlos Guerrero.

This year’s matchup features a rematch of sorts from 2016, where Parkinson edged Navas – who supported Roque’s team in May – by just five votes.

Scheurle finished in first place that year, while Morel finished in second.

The sole independent candidate, German Chapin, who owns a barbershop in town and is better known by his middle name, Alberto, is also the vice chair of the local zoning board of adjustment.

This will be his first time on the ballot after being disqualified for invalid signatures in 2016 and then pulling out of last year’s contest.

Each candidate is seeking a three-year term and the West New York BOE race is on November 5th.
