Bayonne memorializes former Mayor James J. Donovan with park dedication

The city of Bayonne honored World War I veteran and former Mayor James J. Donovan at the Military Ocean Terminal by dedicating a park in his honor.

Generations of the Donovan family attended the dedication of Mayor James J. Donovan Park. The park, formerly known as Triangle Park,  was renamed by the Bayonne City Council this past June.

The park is located adjacent to Harbor Pointe Apartments, a housing complex located on the Bayonne Peninsula that was once called Military Ocean Terminal (MOT).

As mayor, Donovan oversaw the creation of the MOT, as well as a 430-acre expansion of the existing Bayonne Port Terminal.

Donovan served as mayor of the city of Bayonne from 1939-1943.

“ His service to his country and his service to our city and to stand up to the politicians with the no hate rule. He was the man who was fully responsible for where we are standing today,” said Mayor Jimmy Davis. “He will now be forever remembered.”

The Donovan family, along with military veterans and Bayonne City Council members Thomas Cotter, Salvatore Gullace, Gary La Pelusa, Juan Perez and Sharon Nadrowski, sang “ When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” during the unveiling of the park placard.
