At 9:28 a.m. today, the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 85 East 2nd Street on a report of fire in a scrap metal facility, Bayonne Durable Construction, Fire Chief Keith Weaver said in a statement.
Arriving companies found a fire in a large-area scrap pile. The fire progressed to a second alarm and required a marine (fireboat) response from the FDNY, Jersey City, Hoboken and Perth Amboy Fire Departments.
Firefighters used multiple aerial devices and marine units and the fire was declared under control at 10:46 a.m. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation, however, the fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
“Our firefighters did an outstanding job in fighting this fire, and I also want to thank our mutual aid partners for their support with marine resources and for manning our firehouses,” Weaver added.
At the Bayonne firefighters annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony that started at approximately 2 p.m., Mayor Jimmy Davis indicated that a blaze delayed the event.
“Just in true fashion, this morning’s ceremony had to be cancelled because first responders had to respond and do their job, again. That is the reality of our lives,” he said.
