Bayonne Board of Education candidate John Cupo says the school district’s $120 million budget must have “waste somewhere” and should be balanced more efficiently.

“There has to be waste somewhere, or there was to be somewhere where more efficiency can be applied toward a budget of that magnitude,†Cupo said about the budget.
“If you calculate it, per children (sic), $120 million for the year, that makes it somewhere around $12,000 a year to educate one child in the Bayonne school system. There are 1,640 employees, that’s including teachers and all the other people who take care of the school system. There has to be some amount of waste in that budget.”
Cupo also called the Bayonne BOE’s pay scale “top heavy,” exclaiming that “there’s probably $1 million right away that can be saved.”
“I can use that money to solve the teacher’s contract not just for one year … the teacher’s are looking for longevity in their contract.”
Cupo also weighed in on what he thought about Mayor Jimmy Davis endorsing Denis Wilbeck and what his long-term goals for the school district are.
