Authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl in Jersey City that occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. last night.

“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl that occurred just after 10:30pm last night in the area of Rutgers Avenue and Sheffield Avenue in Jersey City. More info to follow,” the HCPO tweeted this morning.
They identified the intersection as Rutgers and Sheffield Avenues, though it is actually Rutgers Avenue and Sheffield Street.
At 9:42 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released more information.
On Monday, July 6th, just after 10:30 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department
responded to shots fired in the area of Rutgers Avenue and New Street, she said in a statement.
Responding officers found the victim, a 17-year-old Jersey City teen, later identified as Tyeah Garner, with a gunshot wound to the upper body. The victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 4:36 a.m. this morning.
The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this case. No arrests have been made at this time.
