“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting in the area of Communipaw Avenue and Crescent Avenue. More to follow,” the HCPO tweeted around 8:11 p.m. on Christmas.

The 13 fatalities are a record low number that the city also reached in 2012 and 2019, with the deadly shooting occurring just days after Jersey City officials touted historic lows in homicides and a significant drop in shootings. Last year, the city recorded 23 murders.

At 11:26 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released additional information.

At approximately 6:04 p.m. Sunday, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a shooting in the area of Communipaw Avenue and Crescent Avenue.

Responding officers located a man – later identified as Khaliq Lockett, 46, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound(s) to the torso. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:51 p.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this case and no arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the HCPO at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip at: http://www.hudsoncountyprosecutorsofficenj.org/homicide-tip/.
