Authorities investigating fatal Jersey City crash that caused car to be engulfed in flames

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is investigating a fatal Jersey City crash that caused a car to be engulfed in flames this morning.

“The Hudson County Regional Collision investigation Unit is on the scene assisting the Jersey City Police and Fire Departments on an active investigation in the area of Hutton Street and New York Avenue. Motorists are advised to please avoid the area,” the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office tweeted at 8:57 a.m.

When HCV arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m., Jersey City firefighters had placed a car fire blanket over a black vehicle and the blaze had already been contained.

Jersey City police also responded and had closed off several streets in the vicinity of the accident.

The JCPD deferred comment to the HCPO, who did not immediately provide more information, but sources with knowledge of the situation said that the car burst intro flames after striking an unoccupied parked vehicle.

At 4:31 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released more information.

Members of the Jersey City Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a car fire at the intersection of Hutton Street and New York Avenue at approximately 7:45 a.m. this morning, she said in a statement.

After the fire was extinguished, responding officers found an unresponsive male behind the steering wheel in a badly burned condition. The victim was pronounced deceased at 7:59 a.m. at the scene.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this incident.
