A subsequent tweet from around 9:36 a.m. said that a probe has been opened over a fatal motorcycle crash on Paterson Plank Road.

“The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred last night on Paterson Plank Road in Jersey City. More information to follow.”

On Friday, shortly after 11:00 p..m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to Paterson Plank Road, south of the Congress Street intersection, on a
report of a motorcycle crash with injuries, officials said.

Upon arrival, responding officers found a motorcyclist with serious injuries after he crashed his motorcycle into a wall.

The motorcyclist was identified as Illich Ferrera, 43, of Hackensack. Ferrera was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The initial investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the
Jersey City Police Department revealed that Ferrera was traveling north on Paterson Plank Road when he may have swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

Ferrera then traveled across the road and then off the roadway where he ultimately crashed into a stone wall, authorities said.

The events surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department.

Investigators are also seeking the public’s assistance to help identify a vehicle and its occupants who may have witnessed the crash. The vehicle is described as a large, older passenger-style van.

Additionally, the van is believed to be dark red in color and is described as burgundy or maroon.
