Animal cruelty charges are expected against a Bayonne man after 11 pit bulls, suspected of being either fight or bait dogs, were recovered from his home late Friday night into early Saturday morning.

William Shaw, 46, of Bayonne, was arrested early Saturday morning for a failure to appear in court warrant dating back to last year, but is likely to face as many as 30 to 40 animal cruelty charges, according to Bayonne Animal Cruelty Investigator Geoff Santini.
The pit bulls were taken from a fourth floor apartment on John F. Kennedy Boulevard in a rescue that spanned from about 11:30 p.m. Friday night until about 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, stated Santini.
Santini also said that the six adult dogs are between three and six years old, while the other five pit bulls are puppies – with the younger canines expected to be adoptable.
“Dog fighting was not occurring at time we were there and it is unclear whether they were fighting dogs or bait dogs,” New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesman Matt Stanton told Hudson County View.
Stanton added that two of the 11 dogs were seized for medical and behavioral evaluation, while the other nine were left in the care of New Jersey Animal Control & Rescue – which is also run by Santini.
Out of those nine dogs, five were picked up by St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, who also assisted in caring for 25 poodles found in a West New York hoarding case last month.
