According to the preliminary investigation, a North Bergen police officer, driving a marked police vehicle, was following a civilian vehicle on Sunday, September 28th, the AG’s Office said in a statement last night.
At approximately 11:18 p.m., that civilian vehicle collided with another, uninvolved civilian vehicle on Tonnelle Avenue between 50th and 51st streets. The two civilian drivers were seriously injured in the collision and were later pronounced deceased.
Their identities are not being released at this time.
An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability into the circumstances that led up to and transpired during this incident, and no further information is available at this time.
A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
It also requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
ABC News (video embedded above) described the incident as “a very violent crash” where victims were trapped in the wreckage.
