At approximately 10:41 p.m. last night, the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 31 West 11th Street on a reported structure fire, Weaver said in a statement.

Arriving companies found heavy fire conditions in the two-story single family home, with fire extending into 29 and 33 West 11th. A utility pole with live wires was also on fire.

Firefighters used multiple hand lines and tower ladders to battle the blaze, which rose to four-alarms. Evacuations of multiple homes on 11th and 12th Street were made. The fire was declared under control at 1:43am and no injuries were reported.

There are currently 23 displaced occupants across four homes, who are under the care of the Red Cross and Bayonne OEM.

“The building department is determining the structural integrity of three of those buildings.
I want to commend our firefighters for the work they performed. Their actions at this fire were nothing short of heroic!,” Weaver added.

“There was a clear and present danger of many more homes catching fire, along with live power lines down in the street. Through their efforts, almost all the fire damage was contained to the three buildings on fire on arrival. I also want to thank our mutual aid partners who fought this fire with us, and those who manned our firehouses to ensure the rest of community remained safe.”
