“Despite the warlike situation they were placed in these men and women saved countless lives through their heroic efforts. We are proud of them all. Detective Joe Seals won’t be returning to his family, his wife and five children are in mourning,” the GoFundMe description says.

“The JCPOBA has set up this GoFundMe page to accommodate all of the generous offers of support we have received in the hours since this incident. All of the dollars raised will go directly to the Seals family, helping them cover education, housing, and other expenses for the five children that Joe loved so dearly.”

The page has seen incredibly robust support, with $223,106 raised as of 10:30 a.m. this morning and 3,600 people donating.

Seals, 39, a 17-year veteran of the department, had previously been called a hero for playing a pivotal role of breaking up a sexual assault in 2008, as well as for arresting a known armed robber in 2010.

His wake has been scheduled for Monday at McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Ave. in Jersey City, from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association said this morning.

Additionally, a funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Aedan’s Church, located at 800 Bergen Ave. in Jersey City.

Seals was the first of four victims gunned down in a roughly four-hour long shoot out with two “prime suspects” in the death of an Uber driver in Bayonne.
