Members of the Jersey City Board of Education were informed of the fatality shortly before 5 p.m., according to Board President Sudhan Thomas.

Thomas also said the board was not provided any further information about the incident beyond the most basic details, but nevertheless expressed remorse over the situation.

“We were devastated to hear about the murder of one more of our children this holiday weekend. The 3rd dead child in as many months falling victims to guns on the streets of Jersey City,” he exclaimed.

“These external social, economic factors, which are continuing to devastate our children will be a full focus priority – along with student achievement – for the Jersey City school board in 2019.”

Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition Movement Executive Director Pam Johnson also made mention of the shooting death on her Facebook page.

“We’ve been looking for a kid for about 2 weeks. Unfortunately, he was gunned down today on these mean streets. This is exactly what we didn’t want to happen. Please pray for his family and all those affected by it,” she wrote.

Minutes after this story was initially published, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office tweeted that the incident occurred near the intersection of Bidwell Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive.

A spokesman for the HCPO said he could only confirm that the incident was under investigation at this time.
