A one-alarm Bayonne blaze caused by an explosion displaced five residents on Wednesday, with no injuries reported, Fire Chief Keith Weaver said.

At approximately 4:40 p.m. on May 29th, telecommunicators in the Bayonne Public Safety Dispatch Center began to receive multiple calls for an explosion in a home at 14 Willow St., Weaver said in a statement.
Arriving companies found evidence of an explosion with a working fire in the three-story home. Firefighters used two hand lines to extinguish the blaze, which was brought under control at 5:14 p.m.
All occupants of the home were evacuated, however, a family member was safely rescued from the basement by firefighters. A nearby home was also temporarily evacuated and no one was injured.
A fire investigation is underway, however, the explosion and subsequent fire appears to be accidental in nature. Five occupants have been temporarily displaced and are under the care of the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross.
“Our firefighters were on scene within minutes of the first call, were able to rescue an occupant from the basement and quickly extinguish this fire. I am proud of their professionalism and skill, as they safely abated this fire very quickly,” Weaver added.
