Union City resident Jose H. Hernandez, 38, was struck by a Ford van and critically injured Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Bergenline Avenue & 32nd Street in Union City, according to authorities.

Both Union City Police and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene where Hernandez was found laying unconscious in the middle of 32nd street, bleeding heavily from the head.

According to witnesses at the scene, Hernandez ran into the path of the van, was hit, and then thrown from the vehicle, causing a severe head injury.

Although he was in the crosswalk, investigators have determined he was crossing against the light and that the driver of the van, Albert Longmore of Newark, had little time to avoid the collision.

Authorities added that he van was not exceeding the speed limit at the time of the incident.
