In a statement, Schillari said the sheriff’s office made the arrest around 4 a.m. this morning with the aid of the North Bergen Police Department. He declined to comment further.

A spokesman for the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the suspect is a county corrections officer and a court appearance has not been scheduled yet.

Two people were killed as the result of a North Bergen hit-and-run near the Coach House Diner last night, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

According to our friends at HudPost, who were one of the first on the scene last night, two senior citizens were struck as a car “aggressively” turned near the intersection of John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Paterson Plank Road.

The driver did not stop after striking the pedestrians, according to multiple reports.

Additionally, sources have identified the two who were killed in the accident as Marie Tauro and Russell Maffei.

The North Bergen Police Department deferred comment to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, who did not immediately return a request for comment.

This story will be updated when more information is available.
