Sires: If we’re going to drain the swamp, we have to start with AG Sessions

U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8) says “if we’re going to drain the swamp, we need to start with the U.S. Attorney General’s Office,” calling for Jeff Sessions to resign. Albio Sires

“With the revelation that the Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, lied under oath about his communications with Russian officials during the Trump campaign, he should immediately resign from office,” Sires said in a statement.

“The Attorney General is charged with upholding the law and should lead by example. He should not be above reproach and needs to be treated the same as any other citizen who is testifying under oath.”

The former West New York mayor and state Assembly Speaker added that he “strongly agrees” with that an independent special prosecutor should investigate the President Donald Trump administration’s ties to Russia.

Speaking with Hudson County View, Sires said it was “appalling” when he heard that Sessions met with the Russian ambassador to the United States twice, once in July and once in September (h/t USA Today).

The country’s top law enforcement official never mentioned that to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his January confirmation hearing, instead stating “I did not have communications with the Russians.”

“We have a president who is supposedly draining the swamp. If we’re going to drain the swamp, we need to start with the U.S. Attorney General’s Office. I can understand one meeting, but two?,” Sires questioned.

“I’m not surprised about anything I hear about this administration: you have a president that doesn’t make his taxes public, we have people that work for him that have contact with the Russians … there has to be transparency for people in this country.”

Sires is one of the co-sponsors of the Presidential Conflicts of Interest Act of 2017, which would require the president and vice president to publicly disclose any potential financial conflicts of interest – also requiring presidential appointees to recuse themselves in such matters.

Sessions has since announced he will recuse himself from any investigations related to Trump’s presidential campaign, though the president remains confident in his AG pick and has written off the controversy as “a witch hunt.”

  1. I agree with what Sires has to say on these issues, but I’d like to know what he is DOING about the abuses perpetrated by this administration on a daily basis. Does he speak to his Republican colleagues in the House and try to spur them into action? Does he object to Ryan’s non-feasance? Does he stand up on the floor of the house and publicly object and call for action?

John McCain speaks out a lot, too, but talk is cheap. We need senators and congressmen on both sides of the aisle to ACT, not just talk.
