“This morning, at approximately 4:50 a.m., the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Bayonne Police Department asking for assistance with a fatal pedestrian struck,” Schillari said in a statement.

A 2004 MAC garbage truck, owned by Suburban Disposal Inc., of Fairfield NJ, struck and killed Caleb J. Serrano, 32, of New York, New York, while making a left turn onto Avenue C from 55th Street, officials said.

The driver, Daniel Peek, 44, of Union City, remained on the scene with the vehicle, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, authorities said.
