Sheriff: Man still in critical condition after Union City ice cream truck accident

A 20-year-old North Bergen man is still in critical condition after being struck by an ice cream truck in Union City on Monday night, according to Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari.

On Monday, August 8, the Union City Police Department, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Union City EMS and Jersey City Medical Center – Barnabas Health paramedics responded to the area Bergenline Avenue & 30th Street on a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, Schillari said.

Union City police arrived and found a 20-year-old North Bergen man unconscious in the street. He was riding a skateboard on the sidewalk, south on Bergenline Avenue, when he continued into the intersection and was struck by a Mr. Softee truck that was traveling east on 30th Street, officials said.

The driver of the truck, a 64-year-old Cliffside Park man, remained at the scene, authorities said.

Schillari added that the victim was transported by Union City and Jersey City EMS to the Jersey City Medical Center where he had to undergo emergency surgery and is currently still listed in critical condition

Crash Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office are reviewing the evidence and video from local businesses in the area. The driver is not currently facing any charges as the investigation continues, explained Schillari.

The ice cream truck appeared to have the right of way and Pena was wearing earbuds at the time of the crash, officials said.
