“At approximately 2:00 p.m., Weehawken Police and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office responded to Port Imperial Boulevard., just south of Pershing Road in Weehawken on a call of a vehicular accident,” Schillari said in a statement.

A red Ford Mustang, driven by Gino DelCollo, 18, of North Bergen was headed North on Port Imperial Boulevard when it collided head-on with a Mercedes Benz SUV, which was traveling. The impact caused the Mercedes Benz to flip, authorities said.

DelCollo was seriously injured and was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center by Jersey City EMS.

The driver of the Mercedes Benz, 34, his wife, 25, and their two sons – ages 5 and 1 – all of Fairview, were taken to Hoboken University Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, officials said.

“Witnesses to the crash told Sheriff’s Crash Investigators that the Mustang was driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed, driving in the center painted median to pass stopped traffic,” added Schillari, noting that crash investigators have determined that the Mustang drifted into the southbound lanes striking the Mercedes Benz.

While being transported to Jersey City Medical Center, narcotics were discovered on DelCollo. As a result, he has been charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and the crash remains under investigation, authorities said.
