Shortly after 1 a.m. today, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired in the area of 109-111 Old Bergen Road, Mello said in a statement.
Responding officers located two unresponsive males – ages 47 and 53, both of Jersey City – inside a residence with apparent gunshot wounds. Both men were transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.
The victims’ identities were being withheld pending notification to their next of kin, but were released late Tuesday morning. The victims are Luis Quintero, 53, and Kenneth Darby, 52, both of Jersey City.
This matter is actively being investigated by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department.

“My thoughts are with the families of the deceased as they mourn this tragic loss, and with the residents of the surrounding neighborhood who may feel unsafe today. This shooting is under investigation by the Hudson County Prosector’s Office, alongside JCPD,” Mayor James Solomon said in a statement.
“At this time, it is our understanding that this was an isolated incident, and we do not believe there is a broader threat to the community. The most fundamental role of government is keeping our residents safe, and we are expanding our undercover officers in hotspots to ensure the safety of residents on every block in the city.”
Editor’s note: This story was updated on Tuesday afternoon to include the names of the two decedents.
