A Newark man was arrested for trying to steal a PATH rider’s briefcase on multiple occasions as the train traveled through Jersey City, officials said.

Melvin King, 45, of Newark, was charged with criminal attempt theft and bail jumping yesterday morning, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.
At about 6:45 a.m. yesterday, Port Authority police received a report of an attempted robbery on board an incoming PATH train on track 3 at Journal Square in Jersey City, officials said.
When the train stopped, Port Authority Officers boarded the train and witnesses identified the suspect to the officers. They said King attempted to take the victim’s briefcase by reaching under the seat several times, starting at Christopher Street all the way up to Grove Street, authorities said.
Port Authority police arrested King and it was then discovered that the suspect had an active warrant out of Union Township and several more out of Newark. King was then transported to Hudson County Jail, police said.
