Jeffrey Hanks, 46, of Bayonne, was charged with driving while intoxicated within 1,000 feet of a school, reckless driving and failure to maintain his lane, according to Police Capt. Janine Foy.

On Sunday, May 15th around 6:55 p.m., Hanks was driving his gray Hyundai south on Avenue E when he crossed over the center line, into the opposite lane of traffic and struck the rear driver’s side of GMC truck traveling north on Avenue E near the intersection of 12th Street, officials said.

Hanks fled the scene and continuing driving south until police pulled his vehicle over at the intersection of 11th Street and Avenue E, where police found him asleep in the driver’s seat by the time they approached the vehicle, authorities said.

The driver’s door could not be opened due to damage from the accident, so the Bayonne Fire Department responded to help remove Hanks from the car, police said.

He was transported to the Bayonne Medical Center as precautionary measure while the truck driver, refused medical treatment, officials said.
