Todd Gross, 48, of Caldwell, was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated in a school zone and reckless driving, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

At 2 a.m. this morning, Gross was driving a Gray 2014 Jeep on the westbound Helix and had struck a private sanitation truck from behind, officials said.

The Jeep’s front end was badly damaged and the driver of the garbage truck refused medical attention, authorities said.

While a Port Authority police officer was interviewing Gross, the officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and he was staggering – also noting a distinct odor of alcohol, police said.

Gross alluded to having consumed some wine earlier in Manhattan, subsequently failing field sobriety and chemical tests, officials said.

He was arrested and his jeep was towed and impounded. Mean while, the garbage truck was able to be driven from the scene, authorities said.
