Robert Long, 45, of Bayonne, was charged with driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, possession of a syringe, possession of narcotic paraphernalia and possession of toxic chemicals, according to Police Capt. Janine Foy.

On Wednesday around 1:29 p.m., Long struck a parked Toyota Camry near the intersection of Avenue F and Mechanic Street, before later hitting the pillar of a building at 471 Broadway, officials said.

Long continued driving to the area of 20th Street and Avenue C, where he abandoned his blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck and fled the scene on foot, authorities said.

Based on numerous tips from eyewitnesses, Long was apprehended in the area of West 19th Street between John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Avenue C, police said.

According to officials, after being found to be in possession of cans of electronics cleaner, he admitted to using the spray cans as an intoxicant.
