The Newport Centre mall in Jersey City is on lockdown after at least two people were injured by a gunman who initially opened fire in the food court, multiple eyewitnesses said.Â

The shootings occurred roughly an hour ago, according to police radio transmissions, and authorities are still searching for the gunman as of 6:58 p.m.
Sources, who spoke under the condition of anonymity since they were not authorized to speak on the matter, told HCV that at least two victims were hit by gunfire.
While Jersey City police did not immediately return requests for comment, many mall patrons confirmed on social media that the mall remained on lockdown and the shooter had not been captured yet.
During a short press conference, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said the two victims were being treated at the Jersey City Medical Center – one person was shot in the stomach, and the other was shot in the arm.
Police Chief Michael Kelly said that two people were in custody, but could not confirm that the shooter that started the incident was one of them.
He also said that “no friendly person was struck by gunfire” and intimated that the incident may have been gang related.

There was a shooting at #newportmall in Jersey City. A friend of mine is held up in the movie theater awaiting evacuation by the PD. Best to avoid the area as the mall is in lock down.

“Jersey City no stranger to gun violence” Ch7 News
So very sorry for all involved. I was supposed to pick up at Macy’s by the Finishline. I always bring back Popeye’s chicken so I don’t have to cook. I had to do food shopping instead. Why can’t we have PEACE? My heart goes out to all involved.
