Professional boxer Danny McDermott, who was born and raised in North Bergen, captured the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver light welterweight title this summer when he knocked out Ronnel Esparas. The achievement was not lost on North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco and the board of commissioners, who honored McDermott with a plaque and brief ceremony at yesterday’s meeting.

“This was a world championship, I always wanted to fight for a world title, so I jumped on the opportunity. I went out there and I came back with the title,” McDermott told Hudson County View, who defeated Esparas via sixth round KO.

“It was a long journey, physically and mentally, and I came away with the championship of the world – which has been a dream of mine,” he reiterated.

McDermott also attributed the biggest win of his 18-fight professional career to “keeping his composure,” picking his shots and refusing to get distracted by Esparas’ showboating throughout the contest.

Editor’s note: Junior welterweight and light welterweight are synonymous for the 140-pound weight class in boxing.
