Assemblyman Raj Mukherji (D-33) said the November 7th governor’s race “is a referendum on the election of Donald Trump” during a Town Hall style event last night.

The event was hosted by New Jersey Working Families and moderated by Action Together New Jersey’s John George, the co-chair of the Hudson County branch.

Mukherji said early on that it was extremely important to get Phil Murphy elected next month because this governor’s race “is a referendum on the election of Donald Trump.”

“The races for governor in the entire country, in the odd year that follows the presidential election: Virginia and New Jersey. That’s why this election is so critical, this is a referendum on the election of Donald Trump, make no mistake of that,” he said.

Along with the rest of the Hudson County Democratic Organization, Mukherji is an unabashed supporter of Murphy.

Mukherji went off on Trump when asked what he would do to help oppose his agenda here in New Jersey, calling his presidency “a crisis in our democracy” not seen since the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

“I don’t know if we’ve faced anything like this in terms of crisis in our democracy since the executive order was signed creating the internment camps of Japanese Americans … American nationals across the country were systematically put,” stated Mukherji.

” … Having elected a leader of the free world who equates neo-Nazis and the Klu Klux Klan to ‘the other side,’ who would seek to prevent immigrants from entering this country and defy the ideals of which this country was founded … believing in the type of hate that the neo-Nazis spew, I guess at that point you have no shame.”

“We’re living to see things I never imagined,” he added, later praising Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and state Senator/Union City Mayor Brian Stack for making their municipalities sanctuary cities.

Mukherji also spoke about some current events, speaking about gun control after in light of the massacre in Las Vegas that occurred just days ago.

“I’m proud to say, that in New Jersey, we do have some of the strictest firearms laws in the nation. That’s not to say that more can’t be done,” he said, also noting that heavy artillery can be legally purchased in the Garden State.

“You can buy a grenade launcher in New Jersey. It is not against the law to buy a 50 cal in New Jersey. I don’t know why you’d need a grenade launcher or a 50 cal, I was in the Marine Corps, I fired a 50 cal. I don’t know why you’d need one to defend yourself or as part of your lawful, constitutionally protected [right] to keep with bear arms.”

Stack and Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro (also both D-33) were advertised for the event as well, but were ultimately not able to attend.

  1. I was going to leave a longer reply, but then decided this idiot doesn’t deserve what I have to say about him. But he did just make me decide that I will NOT vote for Murphy.

    • You are right about one thing: Assemblyman Mukherji does not deserve your snide comments. If you can intelligently make your argument against the Assemblyman, perhaps others will agree with you.
