Dear editor,

Dr. King once said “The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.”

I’m writing to you today to say thank you to our beloved mayors of New Jersey who announced their cities as sanctuaries.

Indeed, this action put them on the right side of American history; standing up to defend our American values and beliefs as an nation of immigrants despite the threats by President Trump and the Attorney General.

After announcing cities as sanctuaries, many Americans questioned if we should stand by our values or fear losing federal funds and financial aid.

No elected official should be challenged with making a choice between losing federal funds and standing up for the core values of our nation.

It’s sad to see Governor Christie not declaring the state of New Jersey as a sanctuary state; but, instead doing the opposite.

Christie is even going further by saying there’s no chance he will send funding to New Jersey’s sanctuary cities, he has even threatened to veto any bill that comes to his desk that would protect these sanctuary cities from financial hits.

It seems as though the governor will use this as a punishment for the mayors who stood by American values and beliefs.

Mr. Governor, not only did you chose the wrong side of our great American history; but, you even decided to punish the ones who chose to do the right American thing.

Our American values and beliefs are not for sale.

Nabil Youssef
