Hoboken welcomes home Olympic bronze medalist Wozniak

More than 50 people gathered to welcome home Hoboken’s Olympic bronze medalist in fencing Dagmara Wozniak.

“I haven’t lived here very long, about 2 years now, and I love this city. It’s just welcoming feeling to come home and have a nice welcome home party,” stated Wozniak.

Wozniak wore her bronze medal to the W Living Room where she was presented a plaque by Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

“We are very, very, proud. Really happy for her. As I said, I think this is probably a Hoboken first and she is part of making Hoboken history.”

Maureen Jaret of Jaret’s Cupcakes in Hoboken was there to greet her with a cascade of celebratory mini cupcakes.

“When you actually know someone that’s going for a medal and she bring sit home,” shared Jaret.

Although Wozniak had her eye on the gold, it was important for her and her team to regroup after losing to Russia, she told Hudson County View.

They lost to eventual gold medalists Russia in the semifinals but beat Italy 45-30 in the bronze medal match.

‘We had to put our disappointment to the side, rest and get ready for the bronze medal match. Im really glad we came in there swinging. We wanted to come home with something.”

The Hoboken resident plans on celebrating for the rest of the night but has her eyes on the gold for 2020.

Wozniak proudly stated, “onwards to Tokyo.”
