The City of Hoboken has changed the time for Thursday’s gym dedication for the late Damon Murray, with the ceremony now being held at 5 p.m. instead of 2 p.m.

During the ceremony, new exterior signage officially naming the gymnasium at 605 Jackson St., the “Damon Murray Community Gym,” will be unveiled, the city said today in a Nixle alert.
An honorary plaque will also be revealed by the main entrance to the gymnasium, with Murray also being posthumously named a Hoboken firefighter, a career he was pursuing before he was fatally shot in April. He was 21 years old.
Following the dedication, local youth and families will be invited to enjoy open court time at the new “Damon Murray Community Gym,” until 7 p.m. The city first announced the dedication would be happening back in May.
A 2020 graduate of, and star athlete for the football and basketball teams at Hoboken High School, Damon Murray was recently working for the Hoboken Board of Education, specifically with special needs children as a paraprofessional.
In the wake of Murray’s death, friends and family members have called on the city and police department to do more for underserved communities, with three council members suggesting to bring back a police precinct at the HHA.
Last month, the Hoboken City Council unanimously approved (9-0) a $1,111,000 bond, allowing the Public Safety Department to acquire a Police Mobile Command Center.
