“Please help us raise money for Scott Smith’s funeral. He is my husband and a father of our 3 beautiful children. He is a hard working [sic] corrections officer and would do anything for anyone,” his wife Genevirre wrote for the description on the GoFundMe page.

In just eight days, 154 people have contributed a whopping $10,395 towards the cause. The goal for the page is $12,000.

“My deepest condolences from Glenny Almonte’s family. I know the pain you are experiencing and pray that God gives you the strength you need during this difficult time,” Stephanie Fernandez wrote on the donation page.

“I am truly shocked and speechless. Scott will be dearly missed. My sincere condolences to his family. May he Rest In Peace,” said Joe Murgittroyd.

An obituary for Scott Smith is not available online and Hudson County Department of Corrections Director Oscar Aviles did not return a call made to his office this afternoon.

  1. Correctional Officers have life insurance…why are they asking for money? No facebook page for the wife (unusual name, easy to find), and no comment from the facility and no obituary, sounds fishy…

  2. I knew Mr. Smith for a few years now. He was always a seemingly mellow and happy guy. I didn’t find out about his tragic death until just recently. My sincere condolences go out to the ENTIRE Smith family. You will be missed Smitty… R.I.P.
