Longtime Jersey City Ward D Councilman Bill Gaughan, who recently served as Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise’s chief of staff, received a key to the city from Mayor Steven Fulop at his retirement party last night.

In a room filled with hundreds of Hudson County politicos, both past and present, Gaughan, who represented the Jersey City Heights on the city council from 1993 to 2013, saw friends such as former Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and ex-Assemblyman/Union City Mayor Rudy Garcia make rare public speeches praising their old political pal.

But first, DeGise recalled an old tale from shortly after he and Gaughan were elected to the Jersey City Council to kickoff the speeches.

Fulop, who had jokes for the older crowd in the room, surprised Gaughan and his family by presenting him with a proclamation and the key to the city.

The man of the hour, Gaughan, cracked on Craig Guy – who will now serve as DeGise’s new chief of staff – and Garcia before thanking everyone for their support.

The laundry list of those in attendance included former U.S. Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-NJ), North Bergen Mayor/state Senator (D-32), North Bergen Freeholder Anthony Vainieri (D-8), Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro, Jersey City Ward D Councilman Michael Yun, Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, state Senator Sandra Cunningham (D-31), Hoboken Freeholder Anthony Romano (D-5), Jersey City Councilwoman-at-Large Joyce Watterman, ex-Gov. Jim McGreevey (D), Kearny Mayor Al Santos, East Newark Mayor James Smith, Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, among many, many more.
