Assembly members Ravi Bhalla and Katie Brennan (both D-32) are calling for the immediate closure of Delaney Hall after a 41-year-old detainee died on Saturday following a medical emergency.

“Edwin Lopez-Cornejo did not deserve to die at Delaney Hall. He lived in this country for 20 years and was raising his daughter here until ICE grabbed him on his way to work. This tragedy is a direct result of the Trump administration and the private prison companies running their detention centers,” they said in a joint statement.
“Delaney Hall has to be shut down immediately. This facility operates outside of the law with no accountability for what happens inside. If Edwin was denied access to the medications he needed to stay alive, every single person responsible must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Yesterday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the passing of Lopez-Cornejo at University Hospital in Newark, the same city where Delaney Hall is located, on August 1st after an undisclosed medical emergency.
“When Lopez-Cornejo experienced a medical emergency while in ICE custody, GEO facility staff and medical staff responded immediately and called 911 for emergency medical services. The official cause of death remains pending further medical examination,” according to ICE.
They also referred to Lopez-Cornejo as “an illegal alien from El Salvador” who was deported from the United States in 2006 after being detained by U.S. Border Patrol.
He illegally reentered the country at an unknown date and was arrested by ICE in Plainfield on June 18th of this year, federal authorities said.
Despite the explanation, Bhalla and Brennan remained unrelenting in their position.
“We cannot tolerate these types of human rights abuses happening right here in our backyard. We need to use every tool we have at the state and local levels to make sure ICE and GEO Group can never do this to another family here,” they concluded.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) called for the closure of Delaney Hall back in May when protests were forming at the detention center regularly, a call backed by the Hudson County Board of Commissioners, as only HCV reported.

Keep the place open Stop attacking ICE they are your sons and daughters protecting the US.
People die its a fact of life.
If you do not know, the names of the medicines you take and the dosages, the intake people, the doctors at the jail have trouble getting you what you need. There are many high blood pressure medicines and diabetes medicines. Which ones?
Cry me a river. He had 20 years to secure health assistance from his consulate in NYC. Beside, he was a felon (never tried) for reentering after deportation.
It’s so endearing getting the bum’s rush from these two “Bum of the Month Club,” pols.
We don’t know all the existent health reasons why this illegal immigrant died. Assuming the US is at fault for his death is nonsense. Has Ravi Bhalla or Brennan ever mouthed a single word for Americans who died AT the criminal hands of illegal aliens? Every week I see stories about violent crimes by illegal aliens, often criminals protected by the Democrat Party who were arrested and released and not turned over to the federal law enforcement.
This is the standard practice of a political party who places illegal immigrants as their No.1 constituency and ignores the mass harm to Americans. Ravi Bhalla is a leader, a leader in the bum of the month pol club. Brennan is an alleged rape victim. Has she said one thing ever about young girls raped by illegal immigrants and those raped and murdered even once?
Don’t even get me started with that Ravi Terror Flier.
